Skeiðarársandur is the largest sandur plain in Iceland. It is the alluvial fan of Skeiðarárjökull, the largest outletglacier in the south of Vatnajökull glacier. It is characterized by its sandy soil and mostly very sparse vegetation. The Lyme Grass on the image was sowed. Lyme grass has been utilized for land restoration since it binds the sand with its rootstalk and intense root system. Öræfajökull Glacier and Hvannadalshnjúkur, Icelands highest peak are in background.
